Therapeutic paddle boarding is an incredible way to build strength, coordination, and sensory resilience while taking in San Diego's best attribute- the outdoors. So many times, we find that children respond positively to the organic and relaxing benefits of being near or engaged with water. In fact, many children undergo a total transformation of self and body, once they are placed in or near water. Our program provides a gentle and individualized exposure to the many components of paddle boarding, with a tailored and supportive experience for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

All paddle boarding clients require a therapeutic Plan of Care. This means that you must be enrolled as a patient at our clinic. Submit a New Client Inquiry here to get started.

What does a paddle boarding session look like?

A typical session usually looks like some combination of the following:
  1. Having FUN
  2. Inviting your child to touch, explore or manipulate a paddle board or oar
  3. Engaging with the water in various positions-- standing, sitting, lying on their belly, etc.
  4. Taking your child through the motor sequences of paddleboarding starting by them sitting on the board and working up to standing if that is something your child is showing signs of readiness for.
  5. Talking about and laying language around the entire experience, further expanding your child's wiring of language and sensory-motor experiences.

Do I need to be in the sessions?

Yes, all parents are required to stay on the paddleboarding at all time, no exceptions please

Will my insurance cover this?

Yes, if you are enrolled in a therapy plan of care, then your insurance typically will cover this service.

Do I have to give up my other therapies to participate?

Not necessarily. Depending on your insurance provider, you may be able to do both traditional OT or PT, as well as therapeutic paddle boarding.

Does my child need to know how to swim?

No. While it's always a plus, knowing how to swim is not a pre-requisite for this service.

What does my child wear?

Your child will absolutely get wet during this experience, therefore, we recommend comfortable swim attire, including layers if it's a chillier day.

Does my child have to wear a life vest?

Yes. All children are required to wear a life vest, regardless of stated or demonstrated swimming abilities.
